Why doing the grocery means a lot to me

Filed under: Features — admin at 11:28 pm on Friday, February 13, 2009

When I was growing up, how I loved spending time with my lola in the kitchen. It was such a convenient place for us to just talk, laugh, and be together. Sometimes, she would scold me for being naughty.

lola-pic.jpg

My loving grandmother, Lydia Kelly Gomez

Every time my lola would cook our meals (she would cook enough for lunch, and the leftover would be reheated for dinner), I would always ask her questions about how she prepared the food we ate—from simple local dishes like tinolang manok, pinakbet, adobong pusit, sinigang na baboy, to the more sophisticated paella, cocido, bacalao, even curing hams. I was so interested to find out how she cooked them. I was already very curious as a child, and you could say my favorite question was “why?” I always wanted to know about how things were done.

I would join her in the wet market during Saturdays. We would go to Cartimar in Pasay. And as a very inquisitive child, I listened carefully to how she would select her meat cuts from our suking matadero. From the liempo to the kasim down to the pata ng baboy, she would carefully inspect them for freshness, color, and smell.  Of course, after doing all that comes the tawaran portion to get the best deal for the day.

Going to the wet section did not bother me, even carrying the big woven basket and/or bags while choosing items in the market was not a problem for a little boy like me.  It would always amaze me the way some tinderas often put calamansi on the fish pile, and have red reflectors on the lights, so that the fish would appear bagong huli at sariwa.

But what amazed me more was how my lola could never be fooled. She would smell the gills, check the red, foggy, frosted eyes, that were sure signs that the fish was no longer fresh. She would touch the body if it’s soft or “lamog na,” a sign that it has been kept frozen over a period of days already. Parang siyang FBI pag namimili! Again, at the end of all the scrutiny comes the tawaran portion.

All these were fun and worthwhile experiences, and I realized several years later that they would influence me.

Whenever I have free time, I want to go to the grocery.

goma02.jpg

I was not really aware about how much I apparently like doing it, until Lucy noticed early in our marriage that for every small thing we lack in the kitchen, I would offer to go to the grocery and get it myself.  She would prepare a list and if she forgets anything, I would gladly go back the following day to get it for us. The thing is, I would usually always end up coming home with just as much stuff as I did the previous visit. Sometimes, I would think I confuse and amuse her because she’d just laugh and smile at me and whatever I brought home.

Whenever I travel with Juliana and Lucy abroad, our first stop is usually the grocery. Maybe I like it because it is a quiet place to shop with thousands of selections—from canned goods to fresh produce, chips, candies and chocolates. The choices are fun and overwhelming. We buy all sorts of food and munchies that we stock up in the fridge of our hotel room.

I do the grocery here in Manila as often as I can. I’ve been to Unimart in Greenhills a couple of times, but I find it so overcrowded nowadays, and I noticed that there are too many sales reps in every aisle. Not that it is a bad thing, but sometimes, it just seems overstaffed. The good news is, it is always well-stocked and the choices are wide. It is a well-engineered building designed by the dad of my good friend, Jay Heredia.

Rustan’s supermarket is also a nice place to do the grocery. But the place I truly enjoy going to is S&R.  They have a wide variety of goods, it is neat and clean, the space in between aisles is wide. You can buy the items in bulk, and they always have food samplings along the aisles, especially on weekends. The counterpart of this grocery chain in the USA is Costco.

I buy the fresh meats and have them cut the way I want them to from S&R. The fish section is not so big but the choices are equally good and fresh.  If you are looking for imported meats, they also have Australian and New Zealand choice cuts. They also have a good selection of processed meats and dairy products.

More than anything else, I really enjoy going to the grocery because it is there where I can unwind, relax, and have a quiet time. I even go to the grocery alone just to have some peace and quiet.

I enjoy preparing food for friends and family. I hate it when people can’t put extra effort to make the food appealing by styling it with a little ‘arte.’ As a matter of fact, I would always remind our maids at home to present the food well, make it enticing to the people who are about to enjoy the food they prepared. I always say to them.

When I was young, my grandmother was not very expressive when it comes to saying ‘I love you’ to me.  But I always knew it for a fact because I felt it.  On hindsight, I realized that she would express her feelings and love towards me and other members of our family thru her cooking. There was a lot of love in every recipe, no matter how simple the dish was. Maybe that’s why her cooking was always so good.

Now that I’m all grown up, I do the same. I share and show my love to my friends and family through cooking. But unlike my grandmother, I make sure I verbally express my love to Lucy and Juliana.

Our house is open all the time to friends and loved ones, and whenever they drop by the house and they haven’t eaten or they just feel like eating, again, I am never too tired to make a quick fix in a couple of minutes. I make use of whatever is in our pantry, whatever leftover we have from the day’s earlier meals in our refrigerator. Come to think of it, maybe that is why I like going to the grocery and buying in bulk, I want to be a boy scout in the kitchen, laging handa!

The last time I went to S&R, I brought along my friend Jay Wambangco, who studied culinary arts but doesn’t practice it anymore. Sayang, because he can really cook well. I decided to make paella that night because Lucy’s dad was craving for it. The only thing missing in S&R for my paella was saffron, it was a good thing I had enough at home.

sr2-copy.jpg

There, I bought squid, fish, clams, big shrimps, chicken, Spanish rice, green peas, paprika powder, and some bottles of white wine. I had some chicken stock and used it to boil the heads of the shrimps—this would add more flavor in the rice. I cooked the paella in our griller in very low heat. Cooking time took me about an hour.

That night, I served my paella with a touch of love to my family and some friends who happened to drop by. That night, they said the food was good. Well, like my lola, the secret: I cooked it with a lot of love.

goma01.jpg

P.S.  Remember I mentioned a few articles back that Juliana made mango ice candy?  I found some pictures in Lucy’s computer that night. I’ll be sharing some of them with you soon. Like me, she enjoys preparing food in the kitchen.

good blog richard!

it makes me feel better knowing that im not the only one fascinated with grocery stores. you’re right when you said it’s a good place to unwind. it used to be part of our quality time and bonding moment with my husband. he was never fond of going to stores, but he makes an extra effort when i asked him. my favorite part is the meat section. my husband would ask me to make it our last stop since ill take years going over all the meat stuff (poor him).. funny but its true. its my relaxing time. best time i do it is at night lalo na sa mga places na 24h hours open ( i love walmart). not so many people. dunno if there are 24 hour places na sa manila. i enjoy reading your blogs and everyone else’s.

Hi Goma,

it’s a good thing you started blogging here. i think you know naman people have had the impression that you’re mayabang but this blog really humanizes you and we all end up seeing how nice you are. i used to see lucy’s brother in the hallways of dlsu, and schoolmates would say he’s really down-to-earth and all and it shows he comes from a good family. you and your wife are really lucky to have chosen each other. keep blogging!

Sana mas maraming lalaki like Goma who help out in the household work (and enjoy doing it), para more happy families, and less separated ones :)..i don’t know if Goma has tried it but i think he should have a cooking show. That should inspire more men to help in the household work, at wag silang mahiyang gawin yon. Whachatink, GMA7 or QTV11???

Wow your paella looks yummy and the presentation was excellent…similar in 5 star restaurants. You seem to enjoy entertaining guests all the time. Your huge solid timber dining table is so impressive. Your blog today is really lovely except the part where you said …”our maids”, “our helpers” would have been much nicer to say like Lucy always do.

congratulations on your blog!
i like going to the grocery too! it unwinds me. though i prefer getting my vegestables and seafoods in the wet market. i remember an economist saying that at times of crisis we should support the small and local industry’s like our local bakery, market vendor, fish ball vendor, any the small time vendor so that they will have money to spend and support their families.
keep it up!

Hi Goms,

I like reading your blog all the time, but one thing I noticed you keep saying “our maids” Hope you can improved on this. Itsa bit humiliating. I think one blogger here mention that helpers or househelp is a lot better.

It’s nice to know na mayroon palang counterpart ang Costco diyan sa bansa natin.I’m an 8 year Costco employee here in San Diego,at I can attest na malaki ang matitipid mo if you buy by the bulk, considering yung time life niya lalo na sa mga ingredients, canned goods, condiments etc. Good luck and more power.God bless you and your family.

Well man you enjoyed multi-tasking!! Not all husband enjoy cooking and buying groceries as much as you do. Men oftentimes are “mainipin” they want to do things fast as if they are in a race urging wives to do the grocery in a snap. Little did they know that health will be sacrificed once we buy things without thinking plus a little brainstorming. For us wives its a big help for the family once the father is patiently doing things and has a high level of tolerance in a positive way. For us working couple we do the grocery together because it is our bonding moment with the family. It is important for the head of the family to be aware of the rocketing price of the commodities. Market time is again another bonding time. Life is so short and should be always spent together as much as possible. The married Richard Gomez is more admirable than before. You are a betther man Richard…keep it up!!

Helen…if i may say so, both you and your husband actually are heads of the family, kayong dalawa. Old thinking na yong ang lalaki lang ang head of the family, especially in our times where there is recession and both parents and even kids have to make important decisions in order to continue living well. Both you and your hubby are decision-makers in the family, so share mo with him mga information he needs to know about concerns that affect your family so he will be aware and will understand where you’re coming from. In the same way, he should also share with you things he knows and which can also help your decision-making. Kung baga, in short, ang dapat ngayon is tulungan within the family, especially between the mother and the father.

Hi Slender…r u male or female? Just curious me. Anyway, sana dalawa kayong mag grocery ng asawa mo para enjoy kayo pareho at walang nagpipigil kaninuman. Yeh, it’s fun doing the grocery, and comparing prices, ingredients, what’s good for the health and not.

i enjoyed reading your blog and nakakagutom talaga. My husband is a good cook too but he don’t want to go to market or supermarkets kasi mainipin siya. And if gusto niya magluto dapat kumpleto rekados kasi if kulang di mo siya mapipilit. anyway, God bless and sana lagi kang may blogs kasi ngayon lang me nahihilig magbasa ng blogs mula ng nagsimula kang magsulat. Good job and congrats sa FF i love to watch and nakikisagot narin ako sa survey. Regards to Lucy and Julianna.

hi, Richard.

your paella presentation is beautiful — you are like a chef! my father is also big in presentations. he gets upset if things don’t look nice.

this sounds like a dumb question, but how are you able to use the paellera on a regular “spider” burner? i want to buy a paellera, but i think it might be too large for a regular-size spider burner.

the last time i cooked paella, i didn’t use saffron. do you think the saffron really matters?

by the way, your ihaw looks so good!

na-realize ko lang Goma, with your current status, how can u say that the grocery is a quiet place to shop and relaxing…eh sa dami ng magpapa-autograph sa’yo how do u say to this anxious people “not here, not now”?..how’d u do that??? U are a public figure and very famous personality.. Unless otherwise, u give them the killer look…lol or the typical Aries trait..”i don’t see u,i don’t hear u…in lay man’s term..DEADMA :P..just teasing Goma…Here in SoCal,I love Ralph’s and Seafood City..I love to cook and I love the kitchen and I love to Chow…was it a coincidence or what??..coz today i was thinking of doing Seafood Paella but due to lack of much recipes,I’ll just do that next week.BTW,our birthday is approaching.. April 7 is approaching.Happy Advanced Birthday to us,Famous Aries Boy!!!!

…okay okay okay “pipol” I’ll teach you fine culture! hmmm “paella” is not called paella unless it’s eaten in the region where the dish was born …in Spain where else? …now that’s what you call “Mr. G’s rice dish”! Oops hahaha 8)

…and why does it look ssso dry? …it should have a consistency of rice pudding …sticky! you probably didn’t use “risotto”…Oh well! ;)
…creamy “gaspacho” anyone? ehem …I mean “tomato juice”? Oops hahaha! ;)

One time may left over kaming spaghetti at may vanilla sauce na naiwan sa desert namin.
Keep it up…..God bless!!!!
