“Will You Marry Me” Moments

The next best leap to a relationship is the “Question” or what we call a wedding proposal. It’s to make that big decision to take romance to the next level and eventually tie the knot. Every wedding proposal is special, of course, and what better way to give love-bitten showbiz fans their fill of love than to give you some of the showbiz couples’ wedding proposals?

You’ll be surprised to know how ordinary couples would relate to the stars’ experiences when it comes to the “Question.” Here is the first of two parts on our celebrities’ wedding proposals.

CHARLENE GONZALEZ & AGA MUHLACH

Baguio City’s cold weather was no hindrance when Aga Muhlach and Charlene Gonzales tied the knot on May 28, 2001.

What led to their wonderful union was simple, as Aga would say in a Ponds commercial:

“We were in this garden, then, she did something funny and beautiful. We did not kiss, there’s no kiss thing.  Kapag kinuwento ko lahat ng detail, magugulat pa kayo, hindi kayo maniniwala.  But really, we were talking, that was the first time we’ve talked that long.

“In the course of our conversation, I just saw something in her.  She was running around, she was jumping, and I said…  No, I said this is like a mirakulo talaga because I said, ‘My God, that’s my wife.’

“That was August 1, she wasn’t my girlfriend. On August 12, my birthday in Singapore, we were together, we were taping for Oki Doki Dok.  [August] 13, in the morning, I proposed to her. “

Added Charlene, “We were not boyfriend and girlfriend. We were not going out or anything.  I don’t encourage everyone to do it that way.  But we were just so fortunate!

“You know, that’s August 13 and our courtship started,” followed Aga. “It was like a year of courtship because we started…That was August 2000, August 13, she said, ‘Yes.’ Kaya noong pag-uwi namin, sobrang high [ako], ‘I’m getting married!’

“From then on, we started preparing for our wedding, so that was our courtship na.”

LUCY TORRES & RICHARD GOMEZ

Lucy Torres met her long-time crush, Richard Gomez, in 1993 when they were shooting the first Lux shampoo commercial. In the course of their five-year meetings  on the set, Richard would call Lucy everyday for two weeks straight then suddenly disappear.
When Lux wrapped up the final commercial in May 1997, Richard’s habit changed. This time, he would call her everyday for two weeks, and not stop. Since then, there was no day when Richard and Lucy wouldn’t talk—he even visited Lucy at her house in Ormoc.

He asked, “How do you get to Ormoc?” Lucy related to Marie Claire (February 2009 issue) about Richard’s plan to visit her. When Lucy gave him directions, Richard surprised her by saying that he would visit her the next day. Lucy at first didn’t take him seriously, but when he called back to say that he had already booked a flight, Lucy broke the news to her family that Richard was coming over.

The very next day, Richard arrived and, in Lucy’s words, “charmed my dad.”

All that happened in September 1997. Since then, there was no day that they didn’t talk. Finally, in December of that year, Richard once again visited and there, he proposed.
Explaining this, she narrates how Richard proposed on the eve of her 23rd birthday. They were seated with friends. They were all tipsy.
“He asked me, ‘Are you happy?’ I said, ‘I’m happy the way we are now.’ Then he said, ‘Will you be the mother of my children?’ Then he asked, ‘Will you be my wife?’ Afterwards, he said, ‘Will you marry me?’”
With that, Richard presented Lucy with a ring inspired by the one Princess Diana Spencer received from Prince Charles. It was an oval blue sapphire engagement ring surrounded by 14 small diamonds in an elegant cluster setting.
If he were conventional, Lucy explains later, it would be a dinner date with the ring in the cake or there would be flowers and serenade. “But come to think of it, I would not have it any other way. I’m glad it happened that way.”
Four months after, in April 28, 1998, the couple married at Lucy’s hometown in Ormoc City.

ASSUNTA DE ROSSI & JULES LEDESMA

The city of San Carlos in Negros Occidental is a picturesque place for rest and relaxation. For Jules Ledesma, his hometown was also the perfect backdrop for his planned proposal to wed actress Assunta de Rossi.

Assunta recalls in an interview with YES! that she got the surprise of her life when 800 volunteers showed up by the lagoon in Jules’s property to take part in Jules’s proposal. “Parang Cecil B. de Mille ‘yong production ko!” Jules laughs, referring to the Hollywood director known for lavish movie productions like The Ten Commandments. As part of his special production, Jules also got a children’s choir to sing “The Hills are Alive”—the theme song of the musical The Sound of Music—while Jules’s kids, Christina and Carlo, proposed on his behalf.

They were married on March 14, 2004 at the Santuario de San Antonio in Forbes Park, Makati.
