Pak, pak, “Pacman”

Ani Poole,

“Everyone has cheap cellphones, and they’re checking text messages…

“Manny Pacquiao’s entourage could easily be called the most ridiculous in sports history. People advise him all the time about this bloated group. They want him to shut it down. Pacquiao shrugs them off. He knows the entourage is completely dysfunctional.”

*******

Isinulat din ni Poole sa prologue na “It is thought that Pacquiao probably suffers from attention deficit disorder (ADD) because he repeatedly shows intensity for a few minutes—the length of one round—and then he is on to something else.”

“Pacquiao is constantly asking his Filipino buddies to bring malunggay leaves, often sneaking them through customs, so the soup’s flavor is just right.”

*******

Balik sa libro ni Poole na isinulat niya bago mag-eleksiyon, heto ang kanyang tinuran tungkol sa mayor: “Yap is trying to wrestle political control of the area from his own brother whom he hasn’t spoken to for several years. It is a deadly rivalry that Manny Pacquiao will be drawn within a few weeks. Tata, Pacquiao’s operative, spits on the ground. ‘We use people in this country,’ he says. ‘Especially the poor.’”

*******

“While Filipinos love Pacquiao, behind his back they make fun of his accent when he speaks English, the language of the educated class. People ridicule him for a lack of intelligence because his spoken English is practically unintelligible—he understands it perfectly…”

*******

“Despite his current fame and fortune, Pacquiao continues to have people sleep on the floor next to him. So when American television host Jimmy Kimmel would ask him, years later about his entourage and wonder why they slept around his bed, Pacquiao looked desperately confused. He was unbale to really explain it.”

*******

“By all accounts including Fernandez’s, Pacquiao saved his life. Buboy, whose waistline could benefit from fewer slices of Spam is still Manny’s bestfriend. Buboy can become overwrought during a fight and if Pacquiao looks like he is in trouble, he will start crying uncontrollably. Roach [Freddie, coach] has had to calm him down several times during championship bouts.”

“In the course of Manny Pacquiao’s rise, he became something even bigger than a sports page myth: The hero worship he received in his homeland has actually been compared to the disenfranchised’s love for Nelson Mandela. His image is on Philippine currency.”

Teka, what currency?
